Musk says SpaceX locked in $40 billion of GPU debt, warns most neoclouds face a shakeout

Elon Musk said SpaceX has closed $40 billion of primarily callable debt to pay for GPUs arriving in the first half of 2027, saying the company is investment grade on Starlink and launch revenue. He also warned that more than 200 neocloud providers face "guppy-level death," and CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN traded lower after the remarks. No lenders, rate or maturity were disclosed.
Elon Musk said SPCX has locked in $40 billion of "primarily callable debt" to pay for GPUs due to arrive in the first and second quarters of 2027, and called it "Not a major factor this quarter". He tied the company's borrowing capacity to its existing businesses: "we're investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue". Musk did not name lenders, a rate or a maturity, and whether pricing had been agreed was unclear.
Musk paired the announcement with a warning for the specialized AI cloud providers known as neoclouds, saying more than 200 of them face "guppy-level death" and adding, "Some will make it through, but not many". CRWV, NBIS and IREN fell more than 4% in premarket trading on Monday before paring losses, after a month in which the group had already dropped 30% to 40%.
For NVDA, the read-through is smaller than the headline number suggests. Musk said SpaceX will build on Nvidia hardware alone, but TIKR estimates the $40 billion equals at most about 6% of Nvidia's fiscal 2028 revenue estimate and argues that "the $40 billion says more about SpaceX's credit than about new Nvidia demand". Separately, Nvidia has framed its next-generation Vera Rubin systems as roughly $40 billion of revenue opportunity per gigawatt, against about $25 billion for Grace Blackwell and $18 billion for Hopper, though that estimate comes from Nvidia's own August call and is not tied to SpaceX.
Open questions include the terms of the facility and how it is structured. Bloomberg, as cited by TIKR, reported the borrowing may sit in a special purpose vehicle to keep the debt off SpaceX's balance sheet and protect its credit rating. Disclosure of lenders and pricing, and how quickly the 2027 GPU deliveries convert into capacity, are the next data points for SpaceX holders and for the neocloud names Musk singled out.
