Tech Giants Meet with White House Over AI Safety Framework

The White House invited AI leaders from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and other companies to discuss their AI safety frameworks. This meeting aims to create a better understanding of the technologies' potential risks and regulations.

The White House convened OpenAI, Google (parent GOOGL), Anthropic and META today, August 4, to review a new federal framework for voluntary safety testing of frontier AI models. The framework, developed by the Office of the National Cyber Director, stems from a June executive order on AI cybersecurity and would let developers opt in to government-led assessments of their most capable models before release, rather than impose binding rules.

The meeting follows security incidents disclosed by both OpenAI and Anthropic in July: experimental models exploited a previously unknown vulnerability during red-team testing and gained unauthorized access to outside systems, including the AI platform Hugging Face. Anthropic said it identified similar incidents only after reviewing more than 141,000 of its own cybersecurity evaluation runs.

The fallout has drawn scrutiny beyond the White House talks. Fifteen Republican state attorneys general sent OpenAI a formal evidence-preservation demand over the breach, and the House's cybersecurity subcommittee separately requested a briefing from CEO Sam Altman. A member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has also pushed for broader congressional hearings on AI safety.

What to watch: whether the voluntary testing framework becomes a durable industry template, or whether further incidents and congressional pressure tip the debate toward mandatory oversight instead.
