Telsa's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised Software Approved in Europe

TSLA's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised software has secured its first European regulatory approval, with the Netherlands becoming the inaugural EU market to clear the technology for road use . The RDW vehicle authority issued the approval following over 18 months of testing, certifying that FSD Supervised meets UN R-171 standards and complies with EU Regulation 2018/858. Tesla owners in the Netherlands who hold an active FSD subscription can expect a software update shortly, the company said.

The approval is notable but comes with significant caveats. FSD Supervised requires the driver to remain attentive at all times — it is not a fully autonomous system — and the technology's commercial footprint in Europe depends on each country's independent regulatory review . The Netherlands' clearance is widely expected to accelerate similar reviews in Germany, France, and other major EU markets, where the regulatory pathway has been the primary barrier to FSD deployment since Tesla introduced the feature in North America.

For Tesla's financials, European FSD adoption represents a recurring-revenue opportunity on top of a one-time vehicle sale, since FSD is sold as a standalone subscription priced at approximately $99-$199 per month. The company has approximately 1.7 million active FSD subscribers globally, and expanding the eligible base into Europe's 8-million-plus Tesla ownership pool could meaningfully improve software margin over time.
