Tesla and SpaceX Announce $16.8B Terafab Chip Factory in Texas

TSLA and SPCX confirmed that Terafab, their jointly developed advanced semiconductor campus, will be built in Grimes County, Texas, outside Houston, with an initial commitment of $16.8 billion,. The announcement came Thursday and covers a first phase only, with the companies signalling that later expansion could push total investment considerably higher.

The plan is unusual in scope: more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space, bringing logic, memory, packaging, and testing onto a single site rather than splitting them across the usual foundry, memory-vendor, and OSAT supply chain,. Elon Musk, chief executive of both companies, called it the largest and most valuable building on Earth. Intel has confirmed it will contribute to the project. The site is expected to employ at least 3,000 people drawn from Grimes and neighbouring Brazos County.

The demand case is internal before it is commercial. The chips are earmarked for Tesla's Optimus robots and Cybercab program and for the space-based data centers SpaceX is developing. That makes Terafab a vertical-integration bet on silicon supply for two capital-intensive product roadmaps, in the same pattern as Tesla's earlier moves into cells and in-house autonomy chips, rather than a bid to sell wafers to third parties.

The local reception has not been uniform. A county meeting the day before the announcement drew hundreds of residents objecting to the scale of the tax abatements awarded to the project and to the process by which they were granted. What to watch: the phase-one construction timeline, how the capital commitment is split between the two companies and whether it appears in Tesla's capex guidance, the shape of Intel's contribution, and whether the Grimes County incentive package survives local challenge.
