Tesla Recalls Cybertrucks Over Wheel Safety Issues
Tesla is recalling Cybertrucks over concerns their wheels could fall off due to a wheel separation issue. The recall affects certain models with base 18-inch steel wheels, potentially causing a serious safety hazard. The problem may have originated in pre-production testing in 2025.
TSLA has issued a recall covering 173 Cybertrucks built between 2024 and 2026 over a wheel-separation defect tied to base 18-inch steel wheels, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration . The condition, traced to wheel hub and bearing geometry that can produce rotor cracking, was first identified in pre-production testing in 2025 .
If left unaddressed, the defect could allow a wheel to detach entirely while driving, an obvious safety hazard. NHTSA has not reported any incidents to date, and the limited population means the financial cost of the campaign is negligible against Tesla's broader operations.
Reputationally, however, this is the latest in a series of Cybertruck quality actions and will keep regulators and consumers focused on production discipline. Investors should monitor whether further campaigns expand the vehicle population, given Cybertruck remains a politically and brand-sensitive halo product. The bigger driver for the stock continues to be Optimus, FSD progress, and energy-storage growth, but execution slips on the truck program risk eroding the premium that Tesla's narrative commands.
