Netflix reports third-quarter results after the close on Tuesday, October 20, with consensus EPS of $0.82, and options were pricing a move of about 9.5% in either direction as of Friday. Traders on CNBC flagged calls outpacing puts and discussed executive changes, after Netflix named Peter Rice chief content officer and announced about 1,000 job cuts this week.
NFLX reports third-quarter results after the close on Tuesday, October 20, with analysts expecting earnings of $0.82 a share, according to SentiSense's earnings calendar. Options were pricing a post-earnings move of about 9.5% in either direction as of Friday, according to earnings-watcher data, slightly below the stock's ten-year average move of about 10.5%. Investopedia ran its own estimate of the expected swing, and CNBC's Options Action segment highlighted calls outpacing puts in Netflix ahead of the print.
Leadership is part of what traders are weighing. CNBC's Fast Money panel discussed executive changes at the company ahead of the report. This week Netflix said Bela Bajaria is leaving as chief content officer, with former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice taking over on October 26, and it announced about 1,000 job cuts, roughly 6% of its workforce. Netflix has not said whether the moves are connected or how they affect its content budget.
On the numbers, consensus revenue of about $12.88 billion sits roughly in line with Netflix's own guidance of about $12.86 billion. The stock sold off after its second-quarter report on softer guidance, so the outlook and any commentary on margins and the restructuring may matter more than the quarter itself.
What to watch: fourth-quarter revenue and margin guidance, management's explanation of the layoffs and the content leadership change, and whether the realized move lands inside or outside the roughly 9.5% the options market is pricing. A call-heavy skew means positioning leans bullish, which can amplify a move lower if results disappoint.
