Uber Acquires Delivery Hero for $14.8B in Global Expansion Deal
Uber Technologies is acquiring Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion, marking a significant move in the global food delivery market. The acquisition aims to expand Uber's reach and services, combining its food delivery platform with Delivery Hero's global presence. This deal has sparked excitement among investors and analysts, with some predicting potential synergies and cost savings.
UBER agreed to acquire German food-delivery group Delivery Hero in a deal valued at $14.8 billion, announced July 16. Uber is offering EUR 41.50 per share in cash and already holds a roughly 25% stake; the transaction covers Delivery Hero's operations across 50 markets and remains subject to regulatory approval.
The acquisition would nearly double Uber's combined mobility and delivery footprint, lifting its total market count to about 99 from 79 and creating the largest food-delivery business outside China. In a related move, investment firm SSW Partners agreed to buy Delivery Hero's operations in 14 markets for about $1.6 billion, helping streamline the deal's competition profile.
Management pointed to more than $1.2 billion in annualized synergies within 18 months and non-GAAP EPS accretion beginning at close. For UBER, the deal is a decisive bet on scale in global delivery; the principal risks are antitrust scrutiny across multiple jurisdictions and the integration of a sprawling, multi-market operation.
