Uber and Zoox Partner for Robotaxis, Expanding Uber's Services
Uber and Zoox have partnered to bring Zoox's autonomous vehicles to the Uber app. The partnership will likely boost Uber's growth and expansion of its services. This new development marks a key milestone for Zoox, as well as Uber's increasing involvement in autonomous vehicles.
UBER and Amazon's Zoox have finalized a multiyear partnership that will bring Zoox's autonomous robotaxis to the Uber app, starting in Las Vegas this summer with plans to expand to Los Angeles by 2027. The deal marks a significant expansion of Uber's autonomous vehicle strategy, which now includes more than 20 partnerships globally.
Zoox's purpose-built robotaxis — nicknamed "toasters" for their distinctive shape — were developed without a steering wheel, pedals, or driver's seat and can accommodate up to four passengers. Since launching free driverless rides on the Las Vegas Strip last year, Zoox has served more than 300,000 riders, though it has not yet begun offering paid rides.
The partnership strengthens Uber's position in the rapidly evolving robotaxi market, where the company is targeting driverless rides in 15 cities by the end of 2026. For AMZN, the deal gives Zoox access to Uber's massive rider network, potentially accelerating the path to commercialization for Amazon's autonomous vehicle subsidiary.
