Uber Partners with Motional to Launch Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas

Uber partnered with Motional to launch a robotaxi service in Las Vegas, according to reports. The move signifies Uber's continued investment in automation and future of transportation.

UBER and Hyundai-backed Motional have launched a robotaxi service in Las Vegas, allowing Uber riders to be matched with all-electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxis through the Uber app at no additional cost. The service, which went live on March 13, represents a relaunch two years after Motional underwent a major operational reset, and marks another expansion of Uber's autonomous vehicle partnership strategy.

At launch, the service is available at designated locations along Las Vegas Boulevard, including rideshare zones at Resorts World Las Vegas and Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, plus Westgate Las Vegas Resort Casino and areas in Downtown Las Vegas and the Town Square shopping district near the airport. Riders requesting UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric may be matched with a Motional robotaxi, with the option to switch to a human-driven ride if preferred.

Initially, Motional robotaxis will operate with a safety operator behind the steering wheel, but fully driverless service is expected by the end of 2026. The partnership adds to UBER's growing network of autonomous vehicle collaborations, which also includes a recently announced deal with Wayve and NSANY (Nissan) for robotaxi development, positioning Uber as a key platform player in the emerging autonomous ride-hailing market.
