RIVN closed up 8.47% at $13.19 on November 2 after UBS upgraded the stock to Buy from Neutral and kept its $17 price target. UBS analyst Joseph Spak called the recent selloff overdone ahead of the company's R2 ramp, said early R2 demand looks solid, and said he expects Rivian to exit 2026 with a positive automotive gross margin percentage. CNBC reported that the $17 target implied about 40% upside from Friday's close, and that the stock had fallen 19% over the prior month before the call.

The move came on heavy trading. Volume reached 64.3 million shares, about 165% above the three-month average of 24.3 million, while the S&P 500 fell 0.50% and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.07%. 24/7 Wall St noted that the intraday run added more than $1 billion to Rivian's market value in a single session. CNBC added that Jefferies had also upgraded Rivian to Buy the prior week.

The upgrade builds on third-quarter results reported on October 29, when revenue rose 38% year over year to $2.2 billion and the budget R2 became Rivian's best-selling vehicle by volume. Rivian separately said in October that its Volkswagen joint venture received a $1 billion term loan, which the Motley Fool described as added liquidity context for the R2 launch; that financing came from the company, not from the UBS note. The margin case still has ground to cover: 24/7 Wall St reported that the automotive business posted an $80 million gross loss in the quarter.

What to watch: R2 production and delivery pace through year-end, and whether Rivian reaches the positive automotive gross margin UBS expects by the end of 2026.
