United Airlines to Introduce Economy Seats that Convert into Couch-Like Spaces

United Airlines will introduce 'Relax Row' in their economy class, providing a space to lie down. This makes United the first US carrier to offer such an in-flight experience.

United Airlines unveiled its "Relax Row" on March 24, a first-of-its-kind economy seating option that converts three adjacent seats into a couch-like flat surface for long-haul international flights. UAL is the first North American airline to offer lie-flat economy seating and holds continental exclusivity on the design, positioning the carrier to differentiate its widebody product in an increasingly competitive long-haul market.

Each Relax Row features individually adjustable leg rests that fold up to 90 degrees, bridging the gap to the row in front to create a seamless flat surface. Customers booking the option receive a custom-fitted mattress pad, plush blanket, and two additional pillows, with a plush toy and children's travel kit included for families. The product targets families with small children, solo travelers, and couples seeking economy pricing with added comfort on routes where premium cabins may be out of budget.

United plans to launch Relax Row in 2027 and roll it out across more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030, with up to 12 Relax Rows available per plane. The move could help UAL capture incremental ancillary revenue from economy passengers willing to pay a premium for comfort, though investors will be watching whether the configuration reduces total seat count or cannibalizes demand for the carrier's Polaris business class and Premium Plus cabins.
